South-Bend... Big Grin

Since Robert mentioned "C. P. R." or Canadian Pacific Railway dials in the title, some of those were 12-hour configuration and perhaps they too deserve to be seen.

In the image below you'll see a watch that turned up at the Chapter 28 Mart in Strongsville last Sunday. I immediately recognized it as a C. P. R. design but also realized I'd never seen one like it before. The seller held out for the tagged price which is really not out of line for a 19-Jewel ORRS Ball-Hamilton, even without this very unusual dial. Movement numbered 586841 which probably pre-dates the dial, is clean and runs very well.

Sometimes, something truly "different" turns up...

Michael,
Thanks for sharing your nice Sangamo Special.

Click on this link for more about your Sangamo Special factory case and other factory cases as well.

Below is an ad from 1927 showing your "Rigid" bow factory case and look at that $150.00 price tag on your "Solid Gold" case.

All the clocks at the St Paul (MN) Canadian Pacific yard office still use the 24 dial with "0" at 12 o'clock position. I've seen this style dial on some Accutrons (they were disallowed in 1978). Has anyone seen this on a pocket watch dial?

Hello William:

I would like to see a picture of this clock the CPR was using for there comparison clock at Minneapolis. The CPR in Canada always used the 24-hour dial. I have seen watches with the 0 but they were all used on the Canadian National Railways, before they were outlawed. They were never used on pocket watches as far as I know.

I am posting a picture of a Eaton's 24 hour dial this is on a Swiss Gallet Brothers 21 Jewel railway pocket watch, which I shall post on my Canadian Railway Watch thread.

As I am preparing to clean this, I remembered this thread. This beauty is a "Full Monty" Pvt Lbl'd "W.H. Gossell, Neepana, Man"(Manitoba Canada)Elgin 16s Canadian 24 Hour dial still drenched in Player Cigarette smoke oil that resides on a 1910 vintage 3-finger 17j Adjusted P.S. movement in a Canadian A.W.Co Case.

Just a FYI, Neepana, Manitoba is a (1910 time frame) 1-day rail run Northwest of Winnipeg. Where -30 to -40 deg F. winters became a real service problem for locomotives, and rolling stock, by 1910, Neepana (Cree name) was an important rail service stop along western CPR routes serving Vancouver, and the N.W. Territories. Also known as the "Lily Capitol of the World" for their wold famous exports of all sorts of Lilies, the original Neepana Rail Station has been renovated to serve as the Town Museum.

Were there regulations that spoke to the inner chapter #s 13-24 being a specific color?

I always thought that CPR dials had red inner chapter #s and "military" dials had black inner chapter #s. BUT- I have NO idea where that thought came from!! or if it is true!

. . . in 1915 or so, and I expect all 200 of those had black "13 - 24" hour numbers. Maybe the red numbers were somehow from the "Ferguson Heritage".

I came accross this thread when I performed a search on Sangamo Special dials. I really do like CPR dials and really enjoy seeing all of the dials in the thread. This makes me want to go ride the Canadian Railroad.

Here is a 19 jewel Canadian Bunn Ball in a a Balco case. Discussed in another topic as an Illinois 19 jewel Bunn that went to Ball Canada. Very interesting piece of history.

Lawrence:

Nice Ball 24-hour with Montgomery style minute numeral's, fairly scarce in Ball dials. I have an Illinois 23J
with the 24 hour dial it sure sets them apart from the 12 hour ones.

This s/n 846923 Rockford 18s 1910 vintage 17J Lever set RR adjusted in a Canadian A.W.Co. "Fortune" case with a dial that begs the "Riddle" treatment to be restored. I believe it is worthy of that as there are so very few Rockfords anyway, and to be a Canadian RR dialed "Rock" makes this one eminently restorable

Here's a couple of Ball Hamilton 24 hour dials. The first is a 999B and if you look close its either "stamped or screened" on. The second is from a video posted right here on IHC 185 and it also has what looks to be the exact 24 hour HAMILTON stamp/screen?
