This watch is in a lot I am liquidating for an estate - and I am uncertain as the model number and relative scarcity / desirability. Any help will be appreciated. Serial number 1246587, 23j, five positions & temperature imprinted beneath the balance. 41mm diameter dial ![]() | ||

Desmond, I believe this will turn out to be a 12-size. You'll see a 21-Jewel version of the Howard 12-size Series 8 on page 266 of the 2006 "Complete Guide to Watches" for comparison. The mechanism is 12 size, but the pillar plate has been stretched to14 size as may be seen by the location of the seconds bit. These are not by any means rare, but are less common than the 17J variety. This example looks like it may have the ratchet wheel replaced. Here is an old photograph of one from my collection.
