Have you ever seen an early Rockford marked "Extra"?
This is a model 4, Grade 52? lever set stem wind ball diamond? damaskeening
Neat beautiful porcelain dial signed just Rockford not RWC like most
This is 1884 I believe

It's a 13 Jewel...what did extra mean?
It's a customers watch, any idea of value?
rarity?
I can't come up with any info on it...does anyone know about this watch?

Thanks in advance

As that serial number Model 4 movment was in the early pre-grade assigned Rockfords, I am speculating Rockford marked "Extra' on it to show the added quality of the watch. The Square type damaskeening later did denote some of the higher grades.

I've seen this pattern before.

I'm puzzled - I can see the square center arbor, so is this watch pendant-wind, key-set? Or can the time be set with the crown, with the square canon pinion being a transitional thing?

I am not sure this relates but on watch cases it meant a better quality case for most case makers and I have had, Years ago, a Rockford transitional hunter that was marked extra and at the time I was told by the elderly seller that the extra meant it was also stem wound.
