Wayne,

Just so you know, that watch is NOT an Illinois Andover. This is without question. The Andover is a smallish watch that uses Illinois' rather rare rectangular-shaped 207 movement. Frankly, while this case COULD be a partially-engraved variation of the generic Illinois "Tank", my guess it is a generic/contract case likely mismatched with an Illinois movement and dial. I'm not sure about the dial either....

Regards,

Rick

I saw another watch called Andover that was the same case, but a subtle difference in the bezel engraving. I think that & my case are jewelers special cases.

Thanks
Wayne

Rick,
I am curious. How long did it take you to collect the group of Illinois Consuls? Also, could you post a close pic of one of the Consuls with the sunburst dial. Thanks,
Tony

Tony,

My Consul set has taken me about 8 years to assemble. If you are familiar with the Illinois Consul, you likely know that there are only about 4-5 known to exist in green, less than a dozen in 2-tone, perhaps a dozen or so with pinstripe dials, perhaps a dozen or so with sub-6 dials, only a very few with plain dials, very few with etched yellow gold pinstripes, and also not many with plain bezels. With all of this in mind, this group has taken a LOT of work and patience. LOL

In this time, I have owned perhaps 8-10 others, but over time I've traded or sold them to get better or different examples. I am still missing one known dial variation, one that I have owned in the past (and sadly traded for my first pinstripe dial, which I later traded in part for my first 2-tone) but otherwise I think I have a pretty complete set.

Included in the set is one in green gold, two in 2-tone, 2 with plain bezels, and the rest with engraved bezels. Within these, are 2 dials with black starbursts (one with a very and terrific dial unusual gold leaf numbers), 1 dial with a yellow gold starburst, 2 with terrific but most common silver starbursts dials, 3 silver pinstripe dials, and 1 sub-6. I also own a few other extra dials and 21 and 19 jewel movements. Since I've taken this photo I have also added a new near mint silver pinstripe dial -- I will attempt to post it along with a black starburst. Here with an etched silver starburst I am posting what I THINK is an original 14K Consul buckle. I located a stash of these 6-7 years ago -- only later did I learn that a coordinating 14K buckle had been available for $5 or $10 extra.

I own a dozen different Illinois Marquis examples -- including a few that are even more rare than the Consuls. I started on it about a year earlier. Smile

Regards,

Rick

Is it as late as that? that style of the open 9 was only seen (On Bulova anyway) up to the mid 20's.

Also, nice to see a lot of Bulova love in this thread.

Stephen, I have been on a Bulova kick lately. It seems that alot of the 1920/30s watches are showing up lately. I acquired this 1930 Black Dial Sky King a couple days ago. I had never seen one with a black dial before.
