I recently have purchased a pocket watch from an online auction site and would like to learn some information about it. It is a size 12 "A. Lincoln" model (Adjusted 5 positions, motor barrel, stem wound-stem set) in a Gold FIlled Keystone Model #183 Case.

What year was this watch made?

Accidently posted before completing. About how many of these watches were made? The Hinges on the outer back case are broken. It seems to be the watches only problem. Would I need to take this watch to a watchmaker to be fixed or could it be fixed by a jeweler.

s/n 4841085 (If I see that right) came into being around 1924. Only 12,000 of these were made to this higher 527 Grade which is a extra high quality movement with 5 position adjustment and Jeweled motor barrel (which is where the "extra" 2 Jewels are used).

It is estimated that 12,000 movements similar to yours were produced and were classified as Grade 527. An additional 4,500 that were made earlier are listed as grade A Lincoln. They are visually identical.
The plate layout is similar to the Marquis Autocrat which is also considered a thin model.

An ad from 1925 shows the most expensive case and dial going for $132 and the least expensive for $86.00

In the future I would be careful about buying a watch with a broken case hinge as repairs typically cost between $50 and $100.

Hi All - glad to find this site!

I have a watch that belonged to my grandfather that is nearly identical to this watch - the movement is the same (SN 4677007) but the case is silver and measures 44 cm across and is 9 mm thick. If I may, I have several questions:

1. Am I correct that this is a size 12 extra-thin watch? If so, why isn't it listed in the table referenced above (there are no A. Lincoln movements)?

2. How can I identify the case model?

3. This watch has a plastic crystal, but the original was probably glass, correct? If so, are glass crystals still available for the watch?

4. My watch runs fast (+1 min/hr), which seems a bit odd. I see on the movement that it can be adjusted, but it isn't clear to me how to do the adjustment. For example, the watch has the typical adjustment lever, but it seems to be held in place by a pin that moves along the screw below it, and the screw looks like it can only be adjusted by removing the movement from the case - is that true, or have I missed something?

I will try to answer your questions but others may correct any wrong info I give or add more.

1. Yes yours is a 12 size extra thin model, yours is a model 3XT grade 527 made in 1925, there were 17 runs made for a total of 14,000. Now these numbers are not exact to give an idea of approx. how many were made. In regards to the table you mentioned that appears to only be a list of model 1.

2. Can you post a photo of the case markings inside the back cover, that might help ID the case model.

3. Glass crystals are still available & our own member William White can custom make you a new glass crystal, you can check out his infor here:

4. I would suggest that your watch is probably in need of a cleaning rather than trying to adjust the regulator. As the oil drys up the watches tend to start running fast. We also have many qualified watchmakers here that can service the watch.

That is a nice 14K gold case, perhaps someone will be able to tell you the case information. In the mean time, I will do some searching.

Having the model won't help finding the crystal. Mr. White has instructions on how to measure the dial to get a proper fit. If you are going to send the watch out to be repaired some watchmakers can get you a new glass crystal at the same time, I have had Chris put in new crystals for me while he is cleaning the watch, you might touch base with him about that.
