Gerald,
The lack of a fast/slow marker strip made me look at it closer. It appears to me that the balance and cock may have been replaced. I do not see any screw holes that would hold the marker strip to the plate.
Here is one of mine with a balance like yours.

Edward,
Oh! well spotted, I see what you mean, I've now had a close look and there are definitely no screw holes to hold a marker so I think you are right.
Thank you for the help
regards

I noticed that the Waltham site says it's a model 1899, 16s, with 17 Jewels, and the model is listed as Royal. But is also says 3/4 plate, so that can't be correct????

Can you tell me why the difference? I'm not that up on Walthams, and I mostly use the database for information on Walthams. I know that there are some of them with incorrect information, but I have never seen any myself.

Good eye on the screw holes, you can see why I was so confused when I saw a full plate and 3/4 listing.

Thank you,

Sheila

I put the serial #11003574 in the data base, and it came back as an 18s, Mod. 1883, 17j, P.S. Bartlett, full plate, open face. I think the 5 in the serial number given, is actually a 3.

WOW!! Now I am no expert on anything mind you, I only have a desire to gain knowledge on my passions Big Grin
I spent quite some time on your watch and here is what I have decided Eek
It is a Waltham 18sz. Model 1883 "P.S.Bartlett" 17J Adj. watch Roll Eyes but Mad
IMHO I believe the following; Wrong balance cock! The before & after watches in this time frame had gone to the "star wheel" index on the cock itself Wink Wrong barrel plate! In this time frame I believe all the barrel plates were marked with the name, "P.S.Bartlett" in fancy script Wink Wrong serial # is listed! I agree with Brian that the CORRECT serial# should be 11003574 Wink
UNTIL a knowledgable Waltham person comes forth with a better explanation, then I believe this is how I see the watch to be. It taxed my brain to try & figure this out as I am not a collector of hardly anything besides 16sz. Hamiltons & Illinois. So thats my story ~ and I'm sticking to it[for now] Big Grin Big Grin Hope this is some help to you on the watch.
I would add also, thank you IHC185 !! before I joined I figured I knew as much as the next guy about watches Cool now I realize how little that I really knew Eek I also realize how very much I have left to learn Big Grin It is with great pleasure and enhancement what IHC185 has brought into my life Smile Smile Smile
regards,
bb

Brian,
I think your right! I resized it, and it does look like a 3.

That clears things up for me.

You guys are so "with it" Big Grin

Ok guys and girls. Every time I read this post I recoil at my use of "marker strip" What is the actual name of this part?
I have looked through a few books and literature I have and can not find a reference to it.

Ed

The parts book I have called them Regulator Index on Waltham, on Elgin it just has index, Illinois Regulator Index. I like that term, regulator index.
