I see some were marked For Railway Service, and others were not. Were most marked 940, or were most left unmarked? THAT SHOULD BE 942!

I prefer the classic layout of the original style of 942 marking seen on 140917, for example. The original style cheese head screws and the balance upper cap jewel arrangement are also very pleasing. These 942 watches were made and can be restored to keep time equal to the electronic watches of today. They do not need lots of writing to place them on the map. Tastes vary, of course. Sorry not deviate from the great Hamilton grade 942, but in Larry's last post he was able to define when this movement was sold. Is this information available anywere on this site? Is there a look-up that I can gather this kind of information on movements that I own. Thanks Keith

What is the difference in a 940 and a 942.They look the same other than the number stamping. Also wonder about the 924/25/26/27 series.I have one of each and they all look the same to my old eyes. Thanks,Norm

Norm, The Grades 942/943 had superior materials and finishing compared to the grades 940/941, as you can see from these excerpts from the 1909 Hamilton Price List. The 942/943 had extra-fine rubies, sapphire pallets, gold jewel settings and all steel parts chamfered, whereas the Grades 940/941 did not. Excerpts from 1909 Hamilton Price List: ![]()

Sorry - was so busy eyeing up Tony's 942... Here is a picture of a 942, so you can see all the goodies that Ed has listed. The difference between the screw heads is usually the 1st sign that you have more upgraded 21 jewel movement. And the demaskeening is next w/ the thicker ribbon pattern around the extreme edge of the plate on the 942.
