The bows on these crossbar cases, at the very top, is where the owner's chain came in contact [metal to metal] and today most are worn out in that area. Like the Ball stirrup bow cases, there was not enough metal and both cases allowed the owner's chains to contact the top area 90% of the time and caused them to wear thin and oft wearing completely thru. The designs on both were flawed
Any amongst you today that carries a pocket watch with a chain, needs to use a plastic or tanned animal hide bow protector to keep the metal to metal contact at a minimum On the Ball stirrup bow cases, I would recommend NOT using the "smaller" hole, but instead use the larger opening between the top of the crown and bow.
