Double Roller Always Marked On Movement? "Click" to Login or Register

When looking at the watch movement. Will the fact it is a double roller always be stamped on the movement? If it is not stamped on the movement how do you tell if it is? Also how do you tell a diamond end stone?

Not always , some double roller Walthams are not marked. I dont think there is an easy way to tell by looking at the watch. To make sure you most likely have to take the balance out to look at the roller setup and the fork end.

David, Diamond endstones began showing up in early 19th century Verge escapement Pocket watches and continued in use on the higher end US-made watches until the nineteen thirties. The Diamonds were always easy to verify because they were Faceted as would be a cut diamond. Closer inspection is sometimes required, but you need only look for them on the higher end Waltham and Elgin watches. A 23 Jewel Elgin Veritas that passed through my collection a few years back has the Balance wheel pivots capped with a Diamond Endstone pair. I think the Escape wheel was also fitted with a pair of Diamond Endstones.

Chris Abell recently serviced an Elgin Model 8, B. W. Raymond for me. It's a Grade 240, 18s, 19j, S/N 15361871, made circa 1910.

I was admiring the movement under a glass, last night, and noticed the balance wheel end stone is faceted. The facet edges form a three-pointed star, similar to a Mercedes Benz insignia. I assume, based on the above posts, this indicates a diamond end stone.

Out of curiosity, I looked at my other Model 8's (I have seven). My Father Time and my BWR wind indicator also have faceted end stones. The others, including a Veritas and three BWR's, have end stones that appear to be flat on top. I assume those are ruby or saphire.

I just want to be clear on this in case I ever decide to sell the watches.

Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.

Chris

Chris, you answered your own question. ONLY Diamond Endstones are "cut", or "Faceted'

Thanks, David, I just wanted to confirm my assumptions.
