The earliest Case 17 examples were by Keystone and marked as "Railroad #17" and "Hamilton Watch Co." in about the 1955-56 area. Shortly after introduction of the 17 Keystone went out of business. At that point identification was changed to Hamilton and Star markings, and those continued until the end. In 1957 Keystone was combined with Star, which continued the Case 17 without the "Railroad #17" marking.

The first Star cases used the "R" ahead of the case number prefix and when those numbers ran out they went with a "P" prefix on their case numbers. Yep, "R" came before "P" with Star !! The "Part Number" for the Star 17 cases was "87120". Star cases in the 1950s and into the early 1970s will have either an "R" of a "P" prefix on the case number. Along with the gold filled versions they also made the Star 17 cases in solid 14K gold from the mid 50's until the 1970's.

The Model 15, 16 and 17 by Star were offered in Hamilton catalogs through the end of regular production in 1969. We also find documented examples of post-production 4C Prefix serial numbered 992B examples in both the Stainless-Steel 15 and Gold-Filled 17 cases. There have been S Prefix 992B's in Solid-Gold Case 17's and those appear to be original combinations. We're talking 1970 on those we refer to as post-production watches.

I would expect to see that case on a watch from 1961 to 1966 and would feel really comfortable with it being on a 1963 to 1965 movement.

regards,
bb
