Ever since I started collecting RR watches I had always thought the Vanguards were 21 and 23 jewel watches I have since run into a 19 jewel Vanguard were there very many of these produced? Thanks Jeff

Jeff, I don't know if you were only asking about 18s Walthams, but the 16s 1899 and 1908 Vanguards were both made with 19 jewels in both open face and hunting versions in comparatively small quantities.

Jeff I thought that too for a number of years but when I started looking realized that the 18s 92 Vanguards came in 17 and 19 jewel. I also found how relatively scarce they are compared to the 21 and 23 jewel versions.

Jeff, The 16s 21J Vanguard is the rarest of them all,I have only seen one offered for sale, and that was a while ago.I think the 19J is much less common than the 23J, which are around everywhere. They all are great watches, as long as you get the earlier ones with the gold Old English lettering, the later models lost the high finish work. Many of them have diamond cap jewels on the balance.Take care, Ted.
