OK, here's one more: R L Van Hoesen was located in Thayer, Missouri, a railroad division point. His son Vivian Van Hoesen scratched his name on the case probably after he took ovear the business. It is possible that the Van Hoesen company was a Ball dealer. The watch is an 18S Ball/Hamilton with 21J.

Thanks David, yours is kind of responsible for me collecting mine. As you can probably guess I am a history nut, so I like to collect things that I know who they belonged to. After seeing your loaner posted here it got me to searching for them, so thanks for turning me onto to these.

It sure looks like your Van Hoesen moved around a lot. I found his obit on the web. Which was;
Robert L. Van Hoesen Obituary Wednesday Morning, January 12, 1949 The Commercial Appeal, Memphis, Tennessee

Services for Robert L. Van Hoesen, retired watchmaker, will be held at 3:30 tomorrow afternoon at National Funeral Home with the Rev. Hugh Hines officiating. Burial will be in Memorial Park.

Mr. Van Hoesen, who was 69, died at his home at 1968 Southern at 5:35 yesterday afternoon after an illness of about five months.

Born in Clarksville, Iowa, Mr. Van Hoesen lived in San Bernadino, Calif., and Thayer, Mo, before moving to Memphis in 1930. He retired in 1943. He was a Jehovah Witness.
Mr. Van Hoesen leaves his wife, Ms. Dulcie Van Hoesen; and five sons, M.E. Van Hoesen, H.E. Van Hoesen, and Frank Van Hoesen, all of Memphis, V.E. Van Hoesen of New York, and Louis Van Hoesen of Mobile.

I found where he is in the 1880 census in Clarksville, Butler, Iowa living with his parents Albert & I can't make out his mothers name.

In 1900 he is still with his parents living now in Willow Springs, Howell, Mo.

In 1920 he is living in Falls City, Richardson, Nebraska. He is married to Dulcie & has 5 sons, Vivian, Morris, Louis, Frank & Edgar. All were born in Missouri except Robert from Iowa. Robert & his son Vivian are both listed as watchmakers in this census.

So according to his obit, he was also in California at some point & then Memphis Tn. where he died.

Hopefully I didn't bore you with all this. As I said in the previous post, I enjoy reading about these people.

In searching for railroad watch inspectors, Bringham was one I had run across, this is from 1965. They were in business for a long time.

Here is a little bit more on the True Brothers, this is from the Jeweler's Circular 1899.

It looks like the 2 brothers were Fred L. True & Harry P. True, Fred was born Feb 1870 & Harry Aug 1864, they were both born in Maine.
