clapping threw the timing off? "Click" to Login or Register
posted
I've been wearing a lady Elgin (grade 447, 10/0s) I cleaned and repaired for about a week now. It was running about a minute fast per day, and I want to work on it some more, but I was enjoying looking down at my wrist knowing I had brought her back to life.

I went to the Joffrey Ballet the other day, wearing the old girl, and after a rousing performance and five minutes of clapping, she runs fast by five minutes a day now.

What happened? I am on spring break now and have time to work on it, so what is it I should be looking at? I haven't taken a look yet.

Hi Dale. Check to see if the hairspring jumped out of the collet and is now one more radius inwards attached. Also, did any timing screws come loose from the balance?

That gets you started.

Roland.

By Collet I mean the two pins that are attached to the regulator that the hairsprings outer most coil slides through when the watch balance is in motion.

Not sure what those pins are properly called, but their in the image shown below.

I took a look at the hairspring and it looked fine, so I put the balance back into the watch and it just wouldn't run again. I fiddled with it and it will run if it is dial side up, but when I move it around it stops.

I am going to take the balance apart and true and poise it.

I'm thinking that should fix it. Any other opinions would be welcome.
