Is there any hope for this dial? Should/can it be repaired? Does anyone have an exact dial in better condition? 18 size single sunk, must be exactly the same.

Any guesses as to what is behind this dial?
|
928 is my guess Sam. Thanks, Jared

IHC Member 250![]() |
sorry Jared....not a 928

Looks like a 7j 18s Hamilton. Rare watch if it is! Don't know if they even gave them grade numbers. Steve

IHC Member 250![]() |
U R right Steve...it is indeed a 7 jewel and I agree with the "they didn't give it a grade" answer too.

I covered the serial #'s last digit...only a 4 digit serial number.
|

What's the serial number? Looks like 2622. Lindell's dial treatment would make it look a lot better. Steve Oops! Looks like we were typing at the same time! ![]()

Yes I think it can be saved. It will never be as good as new but I think it would be presentable.
|
IHC Member 250![]() |
I'm thinking there would be about a zero chance of finding another good one exactly like it. Does anyone else have a 7 jewel that I can compare?
|
IHC Member 1016 |
That's the only Hamilton 7 Jewel that I've ever seen. Funny how we feel about different 7 jewels! Nice example. I don't know if the condition of the dial is so significant as compared to the scarcity of the movement. I do have a dial like this only it is on my 928 I believe. I'll scare up some photos if I have them.

This is the first I've seen in over 30 years of buying/selling/collecting em. I sent you my email if you wouldn't mind sending a photo of your dial. I wonder if anyone else out there has ever seen one or own's one??? Regards, Sam
|
Here is a picture of a dial from one that was on eBay last year. As I recall it was listed two different times and the last time for a starting bid of $2000. ![]()

Here is the movement for that same watch. ![]()

IHC Member 250![]() |
thanks Robert, do you remember what it sold for?
|
IHC Member 1610![]() |
Sam that dial is identical to a dial I have on one of my 929's. So if the feet are in the same place then you should be able to find a dial.
|
Sam, I don't think it sold but I could be wrong. I think the first time it was listed the seller had the opening bid set at $2500 and I know it didn't sell that time. I didn't keep a copy of the auctions, just the photos to add to my collection of Hamilton movement images. Bob

Thank you Robert and Harry for the info. I will keep watch for a model 929. If anyone out there has one, please contact me. Cheers, Sam

Sam the only two of these I have ever seen is yours and Roberts. You may want to check into the hands. They do not look right to me. My two 929's and my 928 has hands like the ones in Robert's picture.
|
IHC Member 250![]() |
I was thinking the same thing Harry, the hands don't look right. I'll bet that hands will be much easier to find than the dial.

https://ihc185.infopop.cc/eve/f...233990757#1233990757 Check this dial of David's. I think you'll find one. The nice thing is the SS dials seem to hold up better than the DS ones. This dial is on my 929. Looks the same to me and has a 5 digit SN on the movement.

Thanks mike....is that one for sale?
|
IHC Member 1016 |
Sam, this dial is not for sale by itself. I suppose any of my watches are for sale for the right price. If you clicked the link you see another. We certainly are not seeing multiple examples of 7 J Hamilton 18s!!! I showed it as it is an example of the availability of these dials. It seems to me that you have a very hard to find, rare(?), watch, that has as its correct dial a fairly common SS script dial. I'll look to see if I have any extras but you will be able to scour ebay and come up with a dial, or parts movement, fairly soon.

Your 7J Hamilton is very very worthy of restoration! Mike hit the nail on the head. Keep after eBay listings for a parts movement or dial.

Thank you Mike and David for the good advice, I will start my search forthwith and am quite relieved to know that chances of finding one are in my favor. Best regards, Sam
