4992b dial - reproduction ?? "Click" to Login or Register

Would like some opinions on whether this dial is original or reproduction? Most I have seen have periods next to each letter in GCT.

Charlie,

The dial feet locations look to be about right and I'm sure you've checked that out already. The ones I'm familiar with are plain copper backs with a painted surface on the front. The G.C.T. being an abbreviation for "Greenwich Civil Time" should have dots after each letter. The fonts and other details are unlike any 4992B dial I've ever seen.

That being said, it is still a very attractive looking dial.

Lindell

Most original 4992B dials look like the one you see below...

Hi charlie,

On page 331 of MILITARY TIMEPIECES by Whitney, there is a 4992B with a dial exactly like the one in your post. The alternative font used for the letters GCT (without dots) is also the same as your dial. Other than the picture, there are no comments in the book regarding the slight variation you have brought to our attention.

The dial appears to be a less common 4992B dial variation, but that alone does not make it a fake. If I needed the dial - and the price was right - I would buy it.

Best regards,
Greg

Thank you Greg... I would believe Whitney to be a crediable research source...

It is interesting to know there are variations here also... but not surprising as production extended for a significant time frame...

Always willing to learn........... Cool

Thanks Greg, Terry, & Lindell for all your help.

Looks like a candidate for a low ball bid.
