I'm in need of some serious help with this beauty-I cannot get the back off to get the number. (Probably a good thing.)

Late 60s Swiss movement nice watch.

It may be the type that has a two piece stem and comes out the front after removing the crystal. I would have to see the back of the watch.

That's a screw on/off case back. If you can't budge it with your claw tool, you could try this trick. I've used it with excellent success many times.

Find a steel nut that's large enough to cover a good portion of the watch's case back. Now crazy glue the nut to the case back. Allow the crazy glue to properly set. I usually wait overnight.

With the nut securely attached, you can now use a channel pliers or good size adjustable wrench to turn and remove the case back. In the past, I've also had to secure the watch case in a wooden jaw vise making sure the case is well protected to avoid scratching.

With the case back off, soak the nut & case back in acetone or nail polisher remover. This will allow you to easily remove the nut.

Risky! Crazy glue or super glue? I also have epoxy.

Not risky at all if care is taken. DON'T use epoxy. Super/crazy glue is easily removed with acetone or nail polish remover. Epoxy isn't.
Where I come from crazy glue and super glue are the same.

I thought so, I was just making sure. I don't know if I trust myself.

Anyhow. Here's what I've come up with.

Dateline LA-5401 circa. 1971? 1/2 plate. Gold plated.

I do know that it's 1/2 plate.

That is an ETA movement. Look under the balance wheel you will see the ETA caliber number.

Do I have to take the whole plate off?

CONGRATS on getting the case back off!

No need to remove anything. Just tilt the case so the auto wind rotor moves to the other side and you should be able to see the ETA marking.

Take a look at this pic as an example. You can see the ETA caliber 2824-2

Peter, you have piqued my curiosity, an ETA 2695? Never heard of it. I searched the ETA database and Ranfft's pink pages and couldn't find this ETA caliber. Please share some more.
