There seems to be an unusual class of watches that were produced by several of the major watch companies. What makes them special is that they are adjusted to four positions and have gilt trim (screws and regulators). They are commonly lever set and have 17 jewels. Here is a picture of Waltham's grade 636 movement. They also had an equivalent 18-size full-plate model - gr.836. Please add your pictures of similar grades from Waltham, Illinois and Elgin.

Here's the Grade 836. I've always thought these were interesting (and underappreciated) watches.

This is an Illinois grade 706 (marked) and it is a private label. the gilding is different in that it is gilded in the recessed part of the bridges, as well as the lettering, screw heads, regulator. It is missing the hairspring if any body has an extra it would be appreciated..Really bad picture, can not seem to get the right angle..

That is what it is suppose to look like..while the movement is marked for a jeweler and Illinois Special, the inside of the case the same, the dial is a Montgomery, signed Illinois Special..Case is pretty beat, but have not seen one signed like that before..

Here is a picture of an Elgin 12-size grade 345, marked "ADJUSTED 4 POSITIONS" and also marked double-roller and with two-tone damasceening. Although marked "TRANSIT" on the movement I doubt this had anything to do with official transit use.

John, I got my 706 as a movement only. Mine has the standard Illinois DS big numeral arabic dial. Mine is one of my favorite carry watches.
