As discussed in an earlier thread, many of us think it would be useful to have a Hampden dedicated research forum. What do you all think about this? Is there enough interest here to sustain such a thing?

I've recently gotten into Hampdens and I'm always interested in learning more about them. If you're a Hampden fan please let us know what watches you have, which ones you like and why, and if you also want to have a dedicated forum for discussing and researching them.

I have a 1920 Hampden 105 model 5 and a 1904 Hampden Wm. McKinley model 4 21j. I'm currently looking for a nice New or Special Railway example, preferably with a Montgomery dial.

Chris,
I read the thread about starting a Hampden forum and I think it is a good idea, and will be well received by the members of IHC185.
I have only two Hampdens at this time, but you never know!

Chris,I too would be happy to have some kind of Hampden sub or research forum, I think probably some of the others on here would too.I have the following Hampden watches in my small collection, unfortunately I still can't picture them here, though: 18sizes- 23J OF Special Railway,21J 2-tone Special Railway,17J 2-tone Sp'l Railway, 17J New Railway,21J John Hancock, 15J Dueber Watch Co.,all open face.16 sizes-21J New Railway,21J No. 105 5th model,21J Wm. McKinley mod. 5,19J Railway mod. 5,No. 108 17J mod. 5, 15J hunting No. 99 , 17J 4th model Dueber Watch co., and a 12size 15J lever-set Gen'l Stark bridge model 4 with the original Dueber case paper in the back.I hope to someday get a No. 104, and a 5th model 23J Special Railway, however those 2 I could never afford now, but it's nice to dream, right?I'd also like to get an 18s 21J Dueber Watch Co., which is quite common and more affordable...Ted.

Your "small collection?" I laughed. That's what, 14 examples?

There's a fair amount of Hampden information to be found, much of it right here, but there's no single place that I'm aware of that a collector can bring all the pieces together.

From this forum:

Scarce and not so scarce 16 size 21 jewel Hampdens

Early 1900's Hampden & Waltham Wristwatches

16 size hi grade bargains still available

One of the last Hampden 18 size Special Railways

Ball Hampden Ad

Hampden advertisement

If you collect Hampden (match holder)

Hampden Private Label

Scarce 23j 16 size Hampdens

Show us your Hampdens

HAMPDEN RELATED ITEMS (case opener)

Most popular 16s RR watch (hampden confused with hamilton)

Some of these have a lot of valuable information in some of them. Others are interesting images or small tidbits of data. Those are from the first few pages of results from a search for Hampden. There are probably at least that many more useful or interesting Hampden related threads already on the board.

Theo says he isn't a "porch dog" when it comes to Hampdens, he can run with the big dogs. I might be considered a "porch puppy" since I only have about 10 Hampdens.

I forgot to list another Hampden I have. It's a 16S OF 17J 4th model W.J. Johnston grade, the one with fish-scale damaskeening and "Hampden" signed in fancy script on the barrel bridge. These are really cool watches, there's quite a long thread on here about them.I'd like to get an 18s version sometime, to go along with this one....Ted.

Here's the Wm. McKinley I bought recently. This one is going back, though. It has a screw missing on one of the jewel settings and one of the case screws is missing too (the one in the shot is a replacement that's too small.) Overall it's in quite a bit rougher shape than expected. Luckily the 105 I also purchased recently is in much better shape. Pictures of that one forthcoming...

Nice 105 Chris! I see what you mean about that dial, The one on yours came off a lower grade for sure. But there are dials around if you want to switch it.If I had an extra, I would send it to you, right now I only have one with chips and hairlines. The 105 I have, SN 3394408, is the same except the "adjusted five positions" is marked differently, but in the same spot.Mine if you turn it to the light at different angles, and look at the striped damaskeening, the number of stripes changes. It looks like there are lines between the lines that you don't see at first.Really a cool effect, I've never seen that on any other watch. These are a nice railroad watch!.....Ted.

It's my impression that it's the wrong dial too. I have yet to see any solid evidence that Hampden put single sunk dials on these. I already purchased a replacement:

This is the classic Hampden double sunk with fancy arabic numerals. I think it'll look a lot more appropriate on the watch.

Have this one coming from the E-place. Very little "good" info just this poor picture. Paid parts movement price so I did OK either way. I think it is a 15j 18s Dueber Watch Co grade. Not sure about the year. Serial listed is 3285754. Will find out when I receive it I guess. Big Grin

Hi Mike, looks like a really nice original Montgomery dial and hands on that one, if you bought it as a parts watch, you got a steal! Also, that 310 is a nice looking movement, kind of a strange looking, although original , Roman dial. They made some pretty nice 12 sizes. Many different metal dials like that came out around that time.Regards, Ted B.

Wayne, those Champions were pretty popular, and yours looks nice.I have a 16s Champion, I bought it for the Dueber YGF case it was in.When I got it, I wasn't planning to do anything with it, but changed my mind because the movement, dial and hands are so nice, it would be a shame not to keep it!They'll run forever if treated right!

Received the 18s 15j Hampden today. For $64 and some change I am happy with it. Big Grin Seller said it has been sitting for 30+ years in a drawer. Gave it a little wind and a shake and it took right off. Case is a maked Defiance Base Metal. Has a nice butler back will very little wear. It is a 15j. stem set.
