Hi Ronny, my old Elgin parts book does not list a grade 581 cound you post the seriel number of your watch.
It does list a grade 580 then skips to 590?

Hi Leon,

The serial number is 40470134. The Elgin website says it is a 581. It is a black faced military 24 hour sweep second hand watch. I always thought they were 571 movements but when I looked it up and saw the 581 grade I thought I better ask.

Found this image on an auction on ebay, I would guess this is what your movement looks like.

That looks like a nice watch, it is one of the Military ones I don't have, I have had several of the 4992B's but not the BWR.

Have you tried Brian Cavanaugh?

I just checked over at ptpwp.com & they show they have your staff for sale. On their main page I typed in 581 & came up with the staff along with some other parts, this is what they say about the part number;
Elgin 581-582 pocket watch balance staff #5968 or 749-16-3-C & 749-16-14-E
