I have serial number 2812176. I assumed it was a DR but I was mistaken. It is a SR.

Does anyone know what serial number the 23 jewel Hampden Special Railway switched from SR to a DR?

Thank you David.

Jon mine uses 1721. You wouldn't have any 1722's would you. They are the DR version.

Harry,

Let me dig around, pretty sure there are a couple in one of these staff kits...

How many do you need?

Harry,

Found one tube marked 18s Hampden that actually had two (2) double roller staffs in it and I am not even sure if they go to a Hampden.

So, we probably better hold off on the DR, if you ever need the single roller, have about 30 of them in different staff sets marked (not counting the ones in the pictures - some of them are not so shiny)

Yes it is very hard to find. The SR 1721 is almost identical to the DR 1722 except for the length. The 1722 is about .03 longer and the 1721 has a large collar where the 1722 has a small collar. I don't have to have one right now but those things are so hard to find I might as well find one so that if I ever break the balance staff in my DR Hampden I will have it.

Thank you Jon for looking. Oh and you will probably find the pink elephant first.

Thank you Richard. I have checked that place out before but there measurements for the 1722 are a lot different than what are in Townswnds book. I have Hamiltons book but I can't find it to check to see which one is right or I may end up with three totally different measurements. I have to find that sticking book! I don't know what happened to it.

The pick elephant video was great. Thanks for sharing it.

Harry,

Below is the top half of page 166 from the Hampden Watch Co. book by Hernick and Arnold. The dimensions for #1722 are the same as what’s shown on the link I posted earlier.

Maybe I am riding the short bus here, but all those staffs you have shown, Richard are single rollers, no DR...

Jon,

The staff in center # 1722 is the 18 size (S.C.)small coller (D.R.)double roller. The information below is from the chart John D. Duvall has posted here under his Helping Hands Tutorials and it also shows DR for the #1722.

RR

Hampden 18 5.83 1.27 1.00 .77 1.27 1720 OS LC
Hampden 18 5.83 1.27 .77 .70 1.23 1721 NS SC
Hampden 18 5.85 1.27 .77 .71 1.03 1722 DR

I’ve never changed a balance staff on a Hampden but it looks to me like the area I highlighted in green would provide the extra space for a roller table then there would be enough length on the staff to fit the safety roller. I'm sure one of our members knows if the the Hampden roller table has the same inside diameter as the safety roller.

Hi Richard,
Yes the Hampden book you show is the same as the link you provided.

But in your next post you show the dimensions as 5.85 long and in the illustration in the previous post it says 5.75 mm's long.

That is the discrepancy I'm talking about. The 5.85 is what Townsends book show.

I don't know which one is correct. I guess I just need to buy one from that link and see if it works.

Thanks for all your help.

Harry

I think what Jon was looking at with the Illinois double roller staffs is the Illinois double roller is a two piece double roller vs. Hampden double roller is a one piece double roller, so the Hampden staff does not have the two steps like the Illinois staff...
