Broken mainspring!
Now this is a broken spring!
Went to wind my desk clock, and SNAP!
No other harm done!

multiple simultaneous failure... very interesting. I wonder if it propagates from the center outward like ripples in a pond? I have never seen one do that.

I've had them break while winding before, but not into 17 pieces!
This one was in an Elgin car/travel clock with 2 mainsprings and a very heavy click to contain the backlash, so no other harm was done.
