Detent stem on a Waltham Royal Model 1888. The stem does not pull up to set time nor by loosing the detent screw
the stem will not pull out of movement. How far can
I loosen the screw. Sure would like to get movement
out of case. Any advice appreciated.

Roger,
The stem release screw needs to turn counter clockwise until it stops. Even then, sometimes time takes some wiggling to get the locking pawl to let go, old grease and dirt stick it in place. Sometimes releasing the movement screw helps, too. That may also be why it will not set. Cleaning and new oil usually fix both problems.
Hope this helps.

Easy way is just to take the barrel bridge off while inside the case and see what's going on.
