My brother sent me this one a few days ago after going thru some boxes of things left by his wife's Aunt Josey....

Page 493 of the Price Guide describes the watch in detail and I am sure that the watch was Uncle Tuffy's who worked in the oil industry for years....

Both crystals are gone but the bezels are intact and of course the hour & minute hands are broken off leaving the stubs still attached to the pinion....I think the main spring is broken also....

The question is....Is it worth repairing....there is no family attachment at all....

What say you....

Regards,
Jerry

Jerry

There is a market for these on Ebay, I see them listed often. It looks like they sell from $125 to over $200.

There are two listed right now & 3 ended within the last two days.

It is my understanding that in the 40's you could by these at your local Shell station for $5.00

I have no idea where this one came from other than the Uncle....and you are correct, they did cost about $5.00 in the 40's....
I guess some would not run filled with oil so Shell took the oil out....

Thanks for the information regarding eBay, I didn't think to look there....

Regards,

Jerry

Definitely worth restoring Jerry,

Quite apart from the watch being very unusual. Girard Perregaux is a marque well sought after by collectors.

As Tom says, GP stuff fecth good prices - even uncased movements!

Checked relative values of the $US for 1940, and $5 US ranges from around $65 - $700 today!
Quite a chunk to cough up at a gas station back then even for a GP Wink

Thanks for posting the photo's.
