I recently picked up an Illinois Bunn 18s 17 Ruby jeweled pocket watch. This is my first Bunn, and as a new collector I am a bit confused by the model numbers on this basic movement, damaskeening patterns, Bunn vs Bunn Special, and the use of "17 Ruby Jewels" rather than "17 Jewels"...well, actually those are really only a few of the questions I have. Serial number 1826846 (1909) Model 6 (?) OF, LS, Full plate, RR grade, going barrel Also, what is the best choice of available cases for this movement? Any information you can provide will be appreciated, and pointers to online information sources will be helpful too. Thanks in advance! Norm

Not sure if I can answer you questions. But the Ruby Jeweled is more desirable to me. You did buy a nice looking Bunn. Congrads. A 1909 Bunn Would of been sold with a Long Pendant case that the bezels would of screwed on and off. I don't see any extra screw marks on the case. So It was most likely a replace that was added by a jeweler when the other case wore out.

Hi Norm, That is a very attractive movement and I agree with Gene that it belongs in a long pendant case and that the Ruby jeweled is more desirable. However I think a swing out case would be just as appropriate as screw of back and bezel. Further I have 2 18s watches from the 1900-1910 period that are in very well made hinged cases that I believe were original to the watch. I think the screw back and bezel are the most likely but do not overlook the swing out case. Finally if I had your nice watch I would look for a good quality silverode or nickle case as those were a favorite for railroaders and of course they are less expensive than gold filled or silver.
