Elgin 4 1/2 Foot Display

Does anyone know a link where I can view a pic of Elgin's 83 movement display? I'd sure like to copy the info and make one of my own. That would be nice on my wall-right over my mother-in law's picture. Wink

Sorry Tom!

This is info in the Guide, page 178 at the bottom: "Important note-most production DATES for this section of Elgin are from a photograph of a 4-1/2 foot display made bt Elgin with 83 movements etc.."

I've always wanted a pic of this to copy and enlarge; I was hoping for something,somewhere...

Marty. Would it be large enough to cover up your mother-in-law's picture? Big Grin
Marty, seriously, write to Sheila, she is wonderful at finding things.

Go to;

Get in touch with them, and they can probably help you. In fact if they want, we could arrange for a reprint series of that display.

You know that made me laugh, I remember the Christmas my mother-in-law sent everyone in the family framed 8x10 photographs of herself to each family member & since I have two kids, I got 4 8X10's. That was her entire gift list. By the way gram if you ready this, only joking!

Thank you, Cooksey. I'm going to ask Sheila if she can get a copy of it; at least now I have something to give her as a starting point.

Hi Marty,

Well, I spent forever trying to find out anything about this one, and no luck. I thought about trying to contact Sotheby's to see if the display was auctined with the other clock and watch pieces they sold for the Time Museum. That was back in Oct. of 2004, so there is no telling if they have the information, or even if it was a part of the original display. It may have been a part of another collection that was combined with the finer clocks and watches.
Anyway, I will keep at it, but this is one that may be one of those tucked away, no written connection items.
It would be nice to see the display.

Well, thanks for trying,Sheila! I know from reading your posts that you've managed to dig up a lot of info for people. If you haven't found it then you're probably right,it's buried or auctioned off-I didn't even know about the auction, that means it could be anywhere!

I guess that I got the impression something so useful would have been copied;but when I first asked around the response I got was "what display?"

Who knows-maybe it'll turn up! Thanks again-

The link takes you right to the 2004 auction.

They start right on that page at the bottom of what shows up.

I linked the page with the picture information on that link before Marty posted this one.

I got excited about seeing it too!
only wish there was a better picture, but this is about as good as we're going to get.

This link is to the Elgin Display

Way to go Sheila!

I was trying to beat you at finding it but I knew I was no match for the Master.

Did you notice the auction estimate & then what it sold for, I wonder who bought it?

There should be a photo of it in the catalog "Sotheby's sale catalog for its New York October 15-15, 2004". I found where a copy of the catalog had been for sell on ebay back in May but no one bought it. I don't know if the photo in the catalog would be any better but it is a possibility.

Tom,
I had posted a picture here on page one, and in another new link to it, but Marty missed the new topic and everything is linked here anyway, but we got it!

Makes no difference, I share ALL that I get and have no problem with sending things everywhere so everyone can take a look.

I got to come right back in and post the picture because it was already in the right size for the board. I love when that happens.

I did see the starting price, pretty big jump!

Now, if we could just see it better.

There are some pretty amazing watches in that auction, and I sure would like to save all the pictures. Now THAT'S a collection!

The picture you and I posted is the one from the catalog, so I don't know if the actual catalog will be much better.

Fun to find these things!

But the better part is in the SHARING.

I guess I should have looked up the page, I think I check this site every few minutes but some how I still miss some of the posts. I edited mine & took the photo out, sorry about that.

I found the catalog for sale on ebay & bought it, I will let you know if it has a better photo.

Will do!

I use to run a photo lab at the crime lab & if the photo is any good I might be able to blow it up into poster size.

I have been reading about the auction since reading your post. There was a guy by the name of Cameel Halim who spent about 3.7 million at the auction. I was wondering if he bought the orginal display, so far I have found where he loans out part of the collection to different places but I have not found a mention of the Elgin display.

Oh wow, I didn't go that far, sounds interesting, and I sure wish I could spend that much on watches.

If you can blow up the photo from the book picture, that would be fantastic.

My program did enlarge it, but you know how that goes, pretty yucky by the time you get the size you want.

I can't wait for you to get the book, so let us know when it gets to you.

Will do, the auction at Southerby's actually was put into three catalogs about the watches, I bought all three, 700+ pages, I thought it would be neat to look at & dream of what I would buy if I was rich. Some of the photos on the ebay site from the catalog look fantastic.

Got the catalog today & it is a better photo but they put it in the seam of the book, I am not sure if I can copy it, I will need to take the catalog apart to see. I will let you know, I might also try contacting Southerby's, perhaps they still have the negative & would share it. Thats a long shot but might be the way to go.
