Hi.

What color should the hairspring be in a 1940 992 Elinvar?

Thank you for your help! Smile

Regards,
Larry

It Should be white color. A replacement from early watchmaker's stock may be blue dyed.

Elinvar is a composition of nickle, steel, chromium, manganese and tungsten which is temperature stable. It's other characteristics are that it will resist corrosion and is antimagnetic it is also known by the name Invar.

As our age creaps up we tend to put things in places that we have trouble recalling. I found a paper on this subject and the inventor was a physicist by the name Charles Edouard Guillaume. He came up with this material in the 1890's and won the Nobel prize in 1920. You might also notice that the balance wheel does not have any of the usual slits cut near the arms and this is a result of the Invar or Elinavar hairspring being good at resisting temperature change and eliminating the need for the bimetalic balance wheel.

Thank you everyone. Quite a lesson!! Smile

I thought they were blue, and maybe changed near the mid 40"s as they got closer to coming out with the 992B. Then I thought maybe the later ones with the blue were replacement ones as David had said.

Thanks again everyone for your help!!

Larry

I have SN-2654298 made in the 9th and last run of the 992E, in 1940, and Samie is correct and as Lindell said in an earlier post all the 992E left the factory with blue dyed "Elinvar" hairsprings....White or Grey "Elinvar" from the factory began with the introduction of the 992B movements....

Jerry

Well that is the main reason for my question Jerry.

This one 2644335 is close to yours, and I was asked that question about it?

1940 Elinvar

Thank you.

Larry

Nice looking 992E Larry....Yours was actually made in the 8th run, toward the end....

Mine is actually in a Mdl. 5 case and will be moved to an appropriate case soon and I also have a 27' movement that will be put into this #5 which is a white gold case and very nice....

Good Luck with your auction....

Regards,

Jerry

Thank you Jerry.

That sounds like it will come out really nice when you are finished with them.

I like trying to make them as close to correct as I know how.

I just learned, from Lindell, that I put the wrong hands on a Bunn Special Today. It had the RIGHT ones on it and I put some NOS purple ones on it thinking THEY were the correct ones. Frown

Guess I better stick to Hamilton! Smile

Larry
