What is the major difference between hairsprings? I need several and can find them on flea-bay but most of them need studs and then there is the question of sizes. How can one tell if it's going to work?
Are there any charts that let you compare thickness, strength, wire size and so on?

There is a little booklet I come across on EBay that covers such things as; tangled hairsprings, how to reform isochronal curves in both breguet and flat type springs, pinning, hairspring selection for different size balances etc.

It is called "Hairspringing" The Manipulation of Old and New Springs by the Watch Repair. The booklet has been self produced by someone, does not have a author or pulishing house name on it, so looks like it might be a treatise from some larger works. Maybe a learned friend on the forums can tell us where it might by from & by whom?

"With the Watchmaker at the Bench" is another good text and deals with more than harsprings although the section on hairsprings is very good. The book is authored by De Carle.

Thanks for the information.. What I really need to do is get off my butt and look at the resources I already have. Right here on the site is the little booklet called "Hairspringing" and my course from the Chicago School of Horology has a great section on the subject too. Hairsprings scare me! When I get done with one it usually looks more like a night crawler.
