I dug out an old Elgin I bought many years ago. I think it ran when I got it but it doesn't run now. Balance is good so it probably needs a good cleaning.

I can not get an Elgin site to come up. I am trying to find out some information on it. All I can find out is it is a 1880 year of manufacture and of course it is key wind.

Thanks for any information you can share. I'm trying to decide whether to clean it or sale it so the information I get back will help me make this decision.

Thanks,
Harry

Hello Jerry: The Data Base for Elgin, Illinois, South Bend, and Hamilton proved to be very helpful to me. Is there similar Data information covering Waltham, Hampden, Rockford, Keystone, and Ingersoll? Where can I go to find info similar on these companies. Thanks for your assistance. Sam

Peter, I have deleted the website that you had listed for Hampden. The owner of that site does not want it mentioned in our posts.

I got behind working on my daughters car. The movement is in a coin silver triple hinged case with a perfect thick unscratched crystal and a very very nice dial. I will be posting pictures and listing it soon unless I sell it before I list it.

Thanks for the help. I don't know why I could not get the Elgin site to work. I guess it is still down.

Thanks Jerry for your site but that information on this movement is either incorrect or I'm not reading it right. It said this was a hunter movement.

Harry, Keywind Model 1 Elgins are ALL Hunter movements. The "open face" would only pertain to them being mounted in "open faced" (no cover} cases with the bow and stem at 12 o'clock. Your 1875 vintage Grade 81 Model 1 15 Jewel unadjusted watch was one of 53,000 made in grade 81 from 1874-1885.

Thank you David. I can see I have been under a misinterpretation for a number of years. I thought a Keywind Keyset movement type (Open Face or Hunting) was dictated by the case it was mounted into. Since KW KS movements don't need a winding stem I figured they were open faced it mounted with the 12 in the straight up winding stem position and Hunting if the 3 was at the straight up winding stem position.

So I was totally messed up.
