Hi

I know that these have been discussed before, but without the Meggers book to refer to I have to ask. This 21j Bunn Special that I picked-up is marked "Adjusted Temperature Six Positions" not the usual "Adjusted Temp And Six Positions". #2809741 What year would this have been produced and the production numbers for this variation.
Thanks

Is this the correct combination of dial and hands for this watch?

The run was 2809401-2809900 16s lever set 21 jewel Model 9, I think it is the 4th pattern rayed & 150,000+ were made. The year should be 1915

Please correct me if I am wrong.

Keith,

Actually this a an early variant of the 21 jewell Bunn Special which were produced in the number range 0f 2724901 through 3016000 which were produced from 1915-1917. There were 7700 of this variant produced and they were first of the 4th Rayed Pattern to be made in open face configuration. Before that was the fishscale and before that the bright spot. They then changed to the abbreviated terms and made a 151,000 more of them. The dial and hands look correct to me. The case could be any period correct model as these did not come from the factory cased.

And as Tom pointed out, yours was in a run that began with 2809401 and went to 2809900 making it in a run of 500. This was also the 9th of 18 runs.

Avery nice example I might add.

Keith,

After taking another look at your watch it makes me wonder if the hands are correct. The second hand looks a little short and the hour and minute hands look a little to thick to me. My early variant #2755123 has much thinner hands. I could not find a "heavy" size shown in the parts book for 16 size.

Tom & Steve

Thanks for the information. Some day I will get a copy of the Megger book and do my own research, but until then, again Thanks!

Steve what a great dial.

Keith, two things, first regarding the concern about the correctness of the hands, and I believe the dial, as the "originals" were damaged by use or heavy handed "repair servicemen", they were replaced as often as spark plugs, ring jobs, Tires and Batteries on the cars of the same period. For your benefit I follow this post with a collage of my Bunn Spc. from this same series that may be arguably "correct", although as I have explained that meant little in those days, and more now to us "collectors". Below is the megger's description of this run; (the pricing is in 1981 dollars)

Mine has the "red" Illinois signature hands, and the "bold Arabic numeral dial". That said, to me the more important thing is the watch as a whole, as yours is very nice "as-is".

Hi

Take a look. I have changed the hands and case on the above pictured watch. Let me know what you think. Yes to quote David those are the "Red" Illinois signature hands.

Sorry for the bad picture.

That's a big improvement Keith!

Adjusting Ehrhardt's values for inflation, $125-$175 in 1981 dollars translates to $292-$408 today.

Best Regards,

Ed

You "did good"! The watch is a standout beauty. Use it! Show it off! btw, save those "old blue" hands. They have value for future stuff.

Keith,

That looks great!!!! These variants offer more gratitude to the owner because the differ from the other 150,000+ that were made. I like having the variants, they are just a little different and make the search for them that much more enjoyabe. I was elated when I finally got my Fishscale and hopefully one day get a Bright Spot.

Happy Hunting,
Steve
