Slightly imperfect 992B "Click" to Login or Register
posted
Although I am mainly interested in Elgin interchangeables (or convertibles) I came home from the Drawbridge with my first 992B, C308311, looking pretty good in a sound # 15 case which has a ghost of the circular brush marks remaining on the back. The movement looks extremely good; I haven't got around to cleaning and checking it out yet. The dial is undamaged but imperfect porcelain--the last letters in Special are slightly lighter than the rest of the printing--and it has two-thirds of a set of fine black hands.
I've made the rounds of the parts suppliers that I know of and have struck out. Would one of the Hamilton specialists be so kind as to sell me a black second hand, the longer length for the Heavy Gothic dial?

Hi Joe,

You bought the world's most practical carry watch!

About your hand, I do not have an extra, but to help this along, the seconds hand you need is the one we discussed in our HOROLOGICAL ITEMS "WANTED TO BUY OR TRADE" at this topic...

As I mentioned there 209040 should be the correct Hamilton part number.

And just for fun check closely, the dial you have may be melamine.

Porcelain HG dials have all squared minute numerals, whereas Melamine Dials will have 45º angles on the 2, 3, 5, 8, 9 and 0 numerals. Check the image that follows carefully.

How did you know it is melamine, Mr. Riddell?
I cleaned the escapement parts and jewels, oiled and reassembled, so I could find out what adjustments the watch needed before I cleaned it for real. After putting it in beat and playing with the meantime screws a little, I had to use the setting on my old TickOPrint that multiplies the errors by 10 in order to see whether the watch was a little fast or a little slow. That was in all 6 positions. Heckuva watch.
