Hi there! Am I right in assuming the obvious - that an 1879 Hampden (119423)that I have just bought and has Woolworth on the movement was a private label watch for that store? Thanks Keith

According to the Hampden data base, yours is listed as a 15 jewel movement and the 'Grade' is Woolworth....and is a mdl. 2, adjusted movement.... There were 5780 units of this variation and 9630 units of production of total grade. There were 500 made in the run that yours was in with a total of 12 runs made and 4 variations in grade. Keith, what name is on the Dial...? Sometimes that is an indicator as well.... Regards, Jerry

F.W. Woolworth started his stores in 1879 with a $300.00 loan. As FWW concentrated on low cost ("Five and Dime") items, it is unlikely that these expensive Watches would be available there. The "Woolworth Sig on the Movement was started with New York Watch Co. of Springfield, which probably led to Hampden Springfield Woolworth models to first use up old NYWS movements.

Jerry, David Warm thanks for this - so Woolworth is a grade name like B W Raymond or Riverside then? I'll post a couple of pictures for the interest. Keith
