How do I value swing cases? "Click" to Login or Register

The pricing guide does not specifically address swing cases in the pricing section.

There is a huge difference between the value of fancy Open Face cases and simple Hunter cases.

Do I split the difference? Or do I value the swing case closer to the numbers for a Hunter case.

When I'm looking at two Vanguards side by side in a listing, one in an early crescent coin edge case and the other in a turned swing case... how much weight should I give to the swing cased watch?

Thanks a mil,

As swing cases are open face, the most important valuation considerations are
1. Material (coin; $120 and silveroid $65 or so depending on wear, etc,)
2. Deduct $30-40 if the winding stem is broken or missing. (due to the case being "swung open" without pulling the stem into "set" . . . breaking off the stem end and rendering the case useless until someone finds another stem . . . fat chance!)

I must add (in general) buying cases, especialy Hunter cases and swing cases that have no winding stem and crown is usually foolish because;
1. Stem parts for a Hunter take an act of God to machine and adjust correctly for all their functions.
2. Sizing the proper lengths of any stem to the cases is chancy at best.
3. Finding a usable crown is difficult at very best.

With less Gold Filled Pocket watch cases, it seems that folks are having to find crowns and stems for silverode style cases.

It does take time and patience, but it is possible to put sleeves in, find a crown, and make a stem function correctly
