Subject is Roman Numeral numbers etched on the lip/edge of case body on the dial side. The Roman Numerals are V11 111 V11 which are the last three numbers of the case serial number from the inside of the back case, 737.
It certainly appears the etching was added post manufacturing but is it odd that no serial number stamp is not shown other than the back case?
The watch is a Vanguard 16 size, ser# 34 500 440, 1955-56.
