Completed Waltham Riverside 1899 premium RR 19J 5p RGJS SW/LS "Click" to Login or Register

Yet another movement that defies fitting nicely in to a particular class.

It has raised gold jewels and the smooth gold wheels rather than the sand paper looking wheels. adj5p, LS OF.

The hands and dial look right to my novice eye. The movement dates to 1907. Any recommendations on a case?

This girl is ultra clean and tries to run every time I touch it.

And the front, a flea bite at the lever, otherwise flawless.

Paul,

IF I AM CORRECTLY READING 16048522 as your movement number (after having enlarged and enhanced your image) here is the information from numbered page 91 of the Ehrhardt Waltham Book:

16048201-700 is listed as being a run of 16-size, Model 99, Riverside, 19-Jewels, Jeweled Main Wheel, Patent Regulator, Open-Face, Premium Materials.

(Note to everyone reading this Smile please always post your movement number!)

Hope this gets you started,

Don

Sorry Don,

I knew to list the movement number... forgot.

So that works out to a production run of 500. Were there a gazillion of them made in other runs?

Would she be happier in an RR case or a dress case?

Thanks a mil,

Paul

Hi Paul,
I think I asked that question about how many and was told approx. 9000 made in total. I do not know if that included P/S as well as L/S.

Paul, according to the Waltham database there were 18,000 19J 1899 OF Riversides made in 34 runs. All were pendant set.

Paul, your 19 Jewel LEVER SET Riverside is a very close cousin to the Lever set Waltham 645 series purpose built for RR use. While most of the 645s (and Riversides) were 21 jewel, early on some were PREMIUM (P grade) Jeweled Motor Barrel (19 Jewel) 5 position RR grade movements! The 6,000 number would be an exaggerated total.

I personally judge the 19 Jewel Model 99 as one of the best deals a RR man could ask for, be it a Riverside or 645! Both were eminently better than the main run of "21 jewel" RR watches then and later due to the the (#18&19) pair of jewels floating the MOTOR BARREL DESIGN Mainspring drive to the wheel train for an optimally smooth transfer of power.

Ill add a Recommendation on a case since no one else has. A nice gold filled case would be nice, I dont think a short stem RR case is right for the age of the movement.
If you are going to carry it a trademark swing out case would also look nice. I am partial to silveroid/nickle cases (yes you can say I'm nuts and I wont mind). IMHO nickle cases are better for carry watches as they are near indestructible.
By the way, nice pickup.

Thanks to Dave pointing out that your watch is LEVER SET which is obvious from the photo if I had looked at it. The Waltham on-line database does say that all the 19 jewel Riversides were pendant set, but Waltham was well known for mixing things up in their runs and the serial number lists do not always pick up the details or are just wrong, as in this case. So the number of PS vs LS is up for grabs, but regardless of the numbers as Dave says these 19J Walthams are fine watches.

Thank you to everyone.

I just scored a a nice Crescent Trade Mark swing case for her... Gonna case her up and hang her next to the 19J Hampden Railway I bought from Dave so they can tell stories to each other.

I found a blown up 1928 7J elgin living in a pristine Trade Mark Swing Case available for fair money. The case is a bit newer than the movement, but I'm really happy with the end result. This girl winds, sets and runs like a new watch. Cool Final out of pocket $130 with a pristine Elgin Dial and set of hands for the parts bin.
