Here is a tale of two Elgins both marked 19 jewel adjusted 3 positions but one is a grade 527 and one is supposed to be a grade 486 17j by the serial number. Both are 16s lever sets, both have 24 hour dials, the 527 with the Monty dial and the 486 with the type 49 dial, both were in Cyclone gf cases.

The dmk effect is nearly identical and the grade 527 was the grade the the 572 replaced. It was sold in markets that did not require adj5p but did require more than 17 jewels. I don't know if this one in the 33M range was a prototype for the later 527 which started in the 35M range or if the marking was just a fluke but it is not a flim-flam add on marking because the font is too close to be a fake.

I went back to check if both watches are jeweled the same, both have cap jewels on the escape wheel which appears to be how Elgin did on later grades such as the grade 527 and also on the later grade 572.

The 16s grades 371-hc and 372-of have jeweled safety barrels, along with the 18s 240 the later grade 455 had cap jewels on the pallet arbor.
