Dial on 18s Waltham

The movement is #9017219 15j. It seems odd that there is no mention of Waltham on the dial, and then no mention of the content from the dial on the movement.

Was this common practice?

Thanks

Jon:

Private-label dials without the marking on the movements was quite common on page 4 of my Canadian private labels thread is a AC Stanners 1198 Queen Street W. Toronto. This dial is on a Waltham 1883 Canadian Railway Time Service. On Page 21 there is another with AC Stanners Toronto on a Waltham 1883 Canadian Pacific Railway movement, and the same dial on a Waltham 1892 Vanguard 21 jewel 18 size.

Larry,

Thanks for the information... Big Grin

Was guessing that someone from up North would enjoy.

They sure are nice looking dials, if I may say!

Jon I have run across this on several watches and my assumption is that the private label dial was added latter as the private label watches are so marked on the movement in my experience.

I beg to differ with you Deacon, I have dozens of Hamilton's jeweler contract dials on railway grade movements 936, 940s all original and verified by the Hamilton ledgers, I'm sure Waltham, Elgin, and Illinois did the same thing through the wholesalers.

That is good to know Larry and I thank you. I know that you could order about what you wanted marked on the dial and movement and I thought some jewelers ordered dials with their name on them as repair/replacements for damaged dials on watches needing repair but assumed any jeweler ordering contract watches with their name on the dial would also have their name on the movement. Never assume! That is what makes our club such a useful and informative place for all of us. I have seen some Iowa watch Co. Rockford movements that had the companies name on the dial and not the movement. To me they appeared all original so maybe that is what they did. When you think about it a jeweler selling a watch would want his customer to have the assurance that the movement was a quality product.

Larry & Deacon, hello....

I have wondered about this for sometime and without having any sales documentation or info such as memo's from the factory how do we know exactly how the p/l dials were handled....

I have thought that maybe the Jeweler himself ordered the dials to fit certain movements and then installed the dials on the movements when he received them from the factory. Because in most cases one dosen't know what the watch is until they look at the movement....

Does this make any sense to you...?

Regards,

Jerry

Putting the "special" Jeweler labeled dial as an option on an already made movement makes more sense.

Goes with the theory that a jeweler could add or substract to a base model watch to make the customer happy or promote their biz.

Maybe, like putting extra features on a base model car (like they sell those anymore)

Most of the factories offered custom dials. I have seen some factory sales sheets where if you ordered say 5 movements custom dials could be provided. Retailers and wholesalers could also have dials made by companies that were independent of the watch company. The O'Hara and various Swiss made dials are I think examples of that. I have always wondered who provided the designs for the custom dials? The jeweler? Perhaps the jeweler gave the order and left the specifics up to the cmpany?

Hello Everybody!
I am from Croatia (Europe), and I have the same watch like this in picture up. I want to know how much he worth? I asked some people here in Croatia and they told me about 5000 kuna's (cca 1000 $). Is that true? Do you maybe know his value?

Thank you on your answers! Smile
