Robert, the "Lossier hairspring" has been wound so the innermost coils have a larger helical spiral to allow more symmetrical compression/decompression of the intermediate coils when the balance wheel spins.

This change to the Model 1908 movements was added sometime in the 1930's or so. Earlier W.I. Walthams (were just as good) did not have this added "tweak' of the Hairspring.

I'm just now breaking one such Vanguard Indicator down, and I were wondering about that meself.

Separately, I've been warned NOT to lose anything, but especially the up/down hand.

Ken,

Just take your time. You won't lose anything. If you do, just get out your magnet!
