...was/am doing an 'antiques show' this weekend and was shown a pw which for all the world looks like a Hamilton 940 but the serial number does not 'compute' or at least did not w/thin the Shugart guide I had on hand...the S/N was 649302 which put it beyond the 940 production run cited in the guide...any idees?...

Hi Jim,

Numbers 649001-651000 should be the lesser 17-Jewel Grade 924 movements. Grade 940 movements are between 651001 and 652000 then 652001-652800 should be the 924 again.

There are similarities as both the 924 and the 940 are 18-size full plate movements. The 940 will have cap jewels that are lacking on the 924 and the damaskeening is somewhat different as well.

To explain the damaskeening pattern, a 924 will usually have a circular design with some ribbons whereas the standard 940 will display heavily defined stripes with crosshatch running diagonally across them.

When it comes to value remember the 940 was Hamilton's most popular 21-Jewel RailRoad Grade whereas the 924 would have been generally considered a more ordinary carry watch. A quality timekeeper nonetheless.

Another point to help in recognizing these watches, the earliest of movements will not be marked as "940" but all Grade 940 movements will have a clearly engraved "21-Jewels" marking over toward the left edge of the barrel cover.

...tnx very much Lindell, the difference in the jewel count shud have occurred to me as well, for as I near as I can recall (the legs don't go first) the 'piece I saw was 17j...what had me stumped was the fact that the S/N was close to the production run for the 940 and the Guide did not indicate it as a 924...tnx again...
