Railroad watch still required? "Click" to Login or Register
posted
It doesn’t seem likely, but do railroads still have any requirements for personnel to have certain watches?
Perhaps not train crews, but maybe dispatchers?
If not, when were they last required?

Railway Time Standards went out in Canada in 1986. Standard Comparison Clocks and employees (Locomotive Engineers, Conductors and Trainmen) were then no longer required to carry railway approved wristwatches and pocket watches.

Larry I have a copy of "CANADIAN RAIL" No. 424
Sept-Oct 1991. If I am reading it correctly, it indicates the last "revision date' for CN approved Railway Grade watches as 1990. It then lists various wrist watches that were approved.
Could you explain the date inconsistency.
Thanks for your time and attention......Joe.....

Spencer it is a good thing you asked me for the list because it made me realize I had credited the list to the wrong location. I had a downloaded copy of the CANADIAN RAIL and had attached the list to that. The list can be rightly attributed to one of our own, Ralph HOPPER #1639,who had supplied this information to IHC members in a posting dated 25 March 2010 15:39, and was gleamed from CN GENERAL OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS Section 22.6.
Dated 17 June 1979 and Revised 1985 and 1990.

I have obtained a partial listing of CN approved watched and thought I'd update this list. This is far from complete so if anyone can add to this I'd be greatful.....continuing the search.

The list is from copies of the CN General Operating Instruction and starts with the 1979 list, goes to a 1985 and 1990 update.

I had a friend who in the early 90's was a conductor for Amtrak on the San Diegan between San Diego and Los Angeles who used a Mickey Mouse watch for his timepiece. I gather that RR approved watches we're no longer required by then.
