I was fixing a 7 jewel Elgin watch marked "SUN DIAL" on the movement and dial. This type of watch was covered here before. A nickle movement w/uncut solid balance. A sort of cheapo, though it is in a coin silver case.

There was one odd note about the watch. The balance pivots are much larger than other 18 sized Elgins I have worked on. The Sun Dial pivots were about .18, while other Elgin 18 size staff pivots I measured came out to slightly less than .14 Rather a pain for replacing the lower balance jewel. All of my mounted Elgin jewels were made for narrow balance pivots. So,I had to open the old setting and fit it with an unmounted jewel of the correct size. Now the watch works.

Best regards,
Greg
