Silver Hallmarks "Click" to Login or Register
posted
Hi all,
Although this is not really a watch item, does anyone know what these hall marks mean.
I think, but am not sure, the lion means sterling, the anchor means Birmingham, The cap Z in a square means 1848, and I can not make out the makers mark, could be GC over & Co.
Thanks for your assistance,
Bill

Peter,
Thanks for the info. I searched through all of the British Maker Hallmarks in that website, for every city in the UK, but could not find what appeared to be the mark I have. I also checked a couple of other websites and could not find the mark. I imagine it would have been a Birmingham maker as the Birmingham mark is there. I was hoping someone could maybe decipher it better than I, or maybe would know of another maker.
I think I had the other information right, if not please correct me.
Thanks,
Bill

the first mark is the makers mark and might not have been someone well know or did not make many so is not in the catalog.

Thanks again Peter. It's the first 2 initials I can not make out, the bottom ones are & Co.
I'll just keep looking.

A better picture or maybe a pencil "rubbing" would give a better look at the makers mark

Peter and Kevin,
The best my little camera will do, I have some friends with better photographic skills than I, will attempt to get one of them to try, and I tried the old pencil rub method to no avail.
Thanks for the effort.
If and when I get a better photo, I'll repost.
Does it appear that I got the rest of the hallmarks right ?

Peter, I also thought it was GS & Co., but can not find that mark in any of the known makers. ?? That is if I have all the other marks correctly described.

Bill, you have made a mistake with reading the marks.

They do signify sterling quality silver, assayed in the Birmingham office but the date letter is for 1924 not 1848.

What you describe as squares are not. If you look at the bottom of each box you will see that they have what I would describe as a wavey line.

As for the maker it may be worth looking at the site linked below. I've had a go but there are so many and I don't have the time.

All the best with your search, Mike

Hi Mike,
I can now see and agree the date stamp is 1924, unfortunate but true. But looking through all the Makers marks in several different sites along with a book of marks that I have, I can not find that mark in any of them. I guess it could be just a relative unknown ? Actually I have looked on the sites suggested at all the marks even if they did not appear similar to this without any luck.
I will continue to look in available books, site, etc., as it would be nice to know if the maker was a known one.
Thanks again for your help, much appreciated,
Bill

My "go-to" reference for silver is Wyler, James B.; The Book of Old Silver; New York, Crown Publishers, Inc.;1937. ISBN 0-517-00089X

The Lion Pasant is a mark for Sterling Silver; the Anchor is the mark for Birmingham; the Z is probably 1924-5, although in this book, the 1924-5 year mark, "Z" is not contained within a sunken box. Previous letters in that font series however, are shown within the box, with the bottom of the box as a mirrored reverse ogee, as your photograph shows. The makers mark, "GS & Co" is not shown in this particular reference, probably because, since the book was published in 1937, 1924-5 was not considered terribly old.

Hi Bill,

The case maker probably is a one George Stockwell & Co (Listed as a watch Importer & case maker, original listed in 1917.

Listed in a couple of places of Business, the first as being in 16/18 Finsbury Street London in 10 Jan 1918, then in 272 Corporation Street Birmingham in July 1918. I would say this is your man.

Cheers,
Bila

Hello
I think that the maker is more likely to be Charles S Green
http://www.silvercollection.it...lvermarksXCDUE2.html
If you look closely at your mark, it has not stamped clearly, the top right corner of the shield is incomplete, the rim and last letter (G) merging together.
The link above will show you what I mean. They were established at the time of the hallmark
