Burlington Watch Co. "Click" to Login or Register

Hi all,
I just landed this Swiss Burlington for RR use watch. I had a couple of other of theses watches but they were not marked for RR use.
This is a 16s lever set ady Temp and 6 pos. in a Cashier Burlington case, with a RN metal dial. This watch appears to have been well taken care of, by all the watch makers marks on the case. I understand that these are quite scarce so
Enjoy,
Bill

Bill, nice watch, I found this info out there on the internet. Cashier was a case model of the AWC Co.

Burlington's Swiss Watches
There were a very small number of 16-size, 21-jewel Swiss-Made Burlington Watches, made by H. Moser & Cie that met all railroad time service requirements, with the exception that in the U.S., on a number of railroads, American manufacture seems to have been required for many years. However, the Swiss-made 16-size, 21-jewel, Burlington watches are Documented as Having Been Used in Canadian Railroad Time Service.

Lorne,
Thanks for the info, there is quite a writeup on H. Moser on the net, and I have a copy of a memo from CPR that included them in their list of approved watches.

But now a more pressing matter it took me less than a full day to break the minute hand on this watch, so if anyone has one to beg, borrow, buy, or steal, please e-mail me, and I will attempt to make this watch right again,
Thanks,
Bill

Peter,
If you are asking how wide the moon part is it is I believe 2mm the wide part in the hand is slightly smaller.
Thanks,
Bill

Peter,
Sorry, I'm not really bright about these things for sure, it appears to be 1/2 mm. if that helps. I have not got a real good micrometer as I do not do this stuff.
Thanks,
Bill

Hello Bill:

That Roman numeral dial would have never been approved for use on the CPR, up until 1969 it would have had to been equipped with a bold Arabic dial for use on Eastern lines, and a Arabic 24-hour dial on Western lines, West of Fort William, Ontario.

Hi, All
I must agree with Larry. It's the first thing that caught my attention when you described it. Not with a Roman dial. There is a good description of the qualifications of a RR watch in the front of the fat book. Someone must have swapped out the dial in years past. Also if Peter does not have the hands I know I have some that look similar to those in his picture but I need to know ALL the dimensions.

I have a normal Illinois produced Burlington and it has a fancy double sunk dial and gold moon hands. It is a triple signed Burlington and nothing about it suggests any "hanky panky" with swapping etc. I tend to think Bill's watch is the same, it is a RR approved grade watch for Canada but Burlington probably took these RR approved movements and added features like moon hands and different dials to make a nice looking dress watches. I will post pictures of my Burlington but I don't see anything that would make me think part swapping took place. If you look at the moon hands on mine they look like Bill's with the exception of being gold colored rather than blued.

one thing in mind Burlington was a catalog store
no watch maker so the watches came from illinois and some from Swiss manufactures some went to rr some
in to private hands catalog order most likely got dress up with other dials hands and so on
Canada RR got the watches to RR standard thats my
logic to it I might be wrong.

I agree Peter, my Burlington would never work for RR service but it is one darn nice looking dress watch that will and does keep RR time. You will see a few 12s 21j Burlingtons with the look that Bill's watch has.
