Could a Elgin "Father Time" from 1910 likely come with a Monty dial. I just bought one and it has, but am unsure about whether they might have come this way. Thanks, Bill

Bill absolutely, here is a link to a 1910 Elgin ad so that should be good enough if anyone doubts that dial is correct. http://elginwatches.org/scans/..._numerical_dial.html

That was the time that the Montgomery dials were in vogue. So much so that Elgin even did a "numeric" dial to beat the 25 cent patent fee. I have listed this 1901 Father Time with the 24 hour dial another very "timely" dial of that period that was required for Canadian RR operations. Its on eBay right now ![]() http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISA...ageName=STRK:MESE:IT ![]()

Bill as David touch base about, Elgin did two types of dials which they referred to as minute numeral dials, one with a 6 in the seconds sunk and one without the 6. By leaving the 6 off they did not have to pay the fee to Mr. Montgomery. After the patent expired nearly everyone put the 6 on the dial. Some will correct you if you use the term Montgomery dial and not minute numerical or numerical minute but some brands like South Bend used the term "Montgomery dial" in their ads over various years. I call them Montgomery or Monty dials and I have more than a few Elgins with the non-6 and with 6 in my collection. I have a low light metal Elgin 24 hour numerical minute dial which is a bit unusual.

This is the dial on my 1911 Elgin 17 jewel, from my old friend Joe Schmid's store, very similar to yours David but private label. Many years ago I bought most of the contents of the watchmakers part of the shop, all but the jewellers regulator which I got outbid on. ![]() I have somewhere a regulator clock advertising dial of E.J.Schmid Rodney Ontario etc.,gold painted on black ,quite lovely really, especially with the Schmid name on it. I also have the original large sun blind from the front window decorated with the name etc in gold. .
