Rockford Watch Co. "Cosmos" "Click" to Login or Register

What can anyone tell me about the "Cosmos" marking on Rockford watched. I have a 16 size Rockford hunting case watch marked COSMOS on the dial and on the movement. Case is marked Landis Watch Co. What's the connection? I can't find out anything with google. NAWCC locked me out as I forgot my password (shows how rarely I go there anymore).

The "Gold Book", "American Pocket Watches ID and Price guide (1980's by Meggers Ehrhardt) Lists these 16s 17J "Cosmos" movements as being sold by Benjamin J. Allen & Co., no city, also as the 1980's era Gold Book values a double signed Cosmos @$250.00, and the current "Price Guide" shows these at about $3-400.00 value in fair shape.

I would speculate the TRUE collectible value at about $500.00.

In short, you have a valuable Rockford PL indeed! Any Pictures?

Sorry, no pix (no camera). Wondering if there was a Landis watch co (as case is marked) and the Cosmos mark.Movement is also marked Rockford watch co. I will probably send it to TomHarrisAuctions for 10/01/10 auction is I can't establish case originality.

According to the "Gold Book", "Landis Watch Co." Private Label watches were manufactured as Open and Hunter Case models in 12s, 16s (Getty), and 18s by Illinois Watch Co. Shugarts Price Guide also lists these in 18s and 16s. There is no mention of them being made by Rockford.

Extra case marks on the watch case would suggest the case came from an Illinois movement.

Thanks David- that's as far as I got. BTW the movement serial number is 580,322 and jives with the Rockford databases I've seen. With better lighting and a better loupe I now notice 2 extra case screw marks; they are very faint. So, I am at least satisfied now that the case is likely not original. So it's on to the auction.

Checking further the 2 fainter screw marks are where they would be on an Illinois Getty model, consistent with the info. David provided.

The case and movement may draw better sold separately.
