Just bought this Beauty(?),on Ebay. Looks can be very deceiving. I will split this combo up,and after some serious cleaning on the Illinois Watch Co. display case, and a new bow,I have a very nice 17 jewel Illinois movement to transplant, and the NYS movement which doesn't look like much, should with that serial number be a ring and pinion movement. These movements were made with many left over worm gear parts, and I try to get all of them I can find, but they are getting pretty hard to find. I'll dig this thread up when both are finished and post some pictures.

Well,I got the Illinois Watch Co. display case cleaned up and the Illinois movement installed. The movement runs great and keeps good time with the regulator set where it is. The NYS movement is running, but it will have to be cleaned before putting into a case. These early NYS ring gear watches have a kinda unusual winding and setting system. This is what it looks like under the dial. This one also has a pinned dial. First NYS I have seen like it. Also, the early NYS like this one have only two feet on the dial, where later ones have three. Couple more for my meager collection.

Great cleanup job Cecil, and the NYS is very unusal, at least to me....I don't think I have ever seen one apart like you have shown this one....will be interesting to see it when it is in its case....
Thanks for showing this to us....

Jerry

If anyone is interested,in my experience with NYS,it seems that the company did things kinda different than most others. It seems they started with the worm gear(model 1),up until around serial number 36000,then made these ring gear watches (model 2)with left over worm gear parts until about serial number 56000,then went to their later models. But keywind NYS seem to have been made later. The keywind models have the later style balance cock(post 56000 numbers),and all the keywinds that I have seen have been nickle finished(which none of the early models have),and without any serial numbers anywhere on the movement. Just seems kinda backwards to me.

Both finished. I had this large Alaska Silver case laying around, looked like a good home for the NYS movement. Replaced the dial, cleaned and oiled the movement, and it runs great, and has been keeping time for a little over 6 hours now.

Cecil, I sure admire what you have done there with that NYS! You have made a sows ear into a silk purse. I agree with Jerry, all that silver or silveroid looks GREAT around the gilt movement. Mike
