Hi all. I have a poor Riverside (s/n 29233570, a 1908 16s 21j grade 1621 but with Riverside engraved on the movement) with apparently the escape wheel arbor in bad conditions: the wheel is wobbling, but if you find the right postion, and do not move the watch any longer,it will go on forever with a decent time keeping, and I deem that this means that the jewels are not the source of the problem. I think that with the spare part it shouldn't be a very complicate or expensive operation to take it back to good ocnditions. Could you help me ?
Many many thanks and regards to all
Mario

I am not sure how much help this will be, according to "Illustrated Manual of American Watch Movements", all material used in the 16 size 1908 model is the same as used in the 16 size 1899 model, with the following exceptions: Balance cock, Crown wheel, Crown wheel washer & Winding Pinion.

They list the following escape wheels;

4826 escape wheel gilt 15 teeth

4827 escape wheel steel 15 teeth a grade made without hub

4828 escape wheel gilt, 15 teeth & pinion, 8 leaves, straight pivots

4829 escape wheel steel, 15 teeth & pinion, 8 leaves, straight pivots made without hub in A grade

4830 escape wheel steel 15 teeth & pinion, 8 leaves conical pivots

I do have a 15 jewel Waltham Model 1899 for parts if you want it, it is serial # 10368825 all I can tell you is it has a gilt escape wheel ( I haven't taken it a part).

Hi Tom, pleasure reading you. The poor thing has a steel escape wheel, and it's a class A, I deem it should be the 4829. Here there is a picture of the escape wheel escapment
and here a pallet on the action (vanity, vanity ...)pallet
Kindest regards and many thanks, Tom

Thanks, now it works. You have checked the jewels? From the bottom photos it looks like it is out of line at the top, I was just curious what the jewel looked like under the cap jewel.

Tom, I'll check, you right. If there's a problem there, however, it should be in the base one. All I have right now is in the picture I added at the same address. I'd better check visually, but I have to wait until tomorrow, here is past 9 pm, and I don't feel like opening the watch back
Thanks, Tom !

I look forward to your answer, I am by far not any where close to being an expert on watches.

I kept thinking about it, you said the escape wheel wobbles. Does it actual wobble or is just bent? I would think if it wobbles back & forth it would be a jewel. I would think that since the ends are suppose to fit fairly close in the ends of the jewel, if the jewels were fine then it couldn't wobble.

Maybe I am reading too much into your description, you say that if you find the right position & don't move it it runs. My bet would be a worn of cracked jewel.

I look forward to hearing what you find, I might learn something here, either I am totally off track or right.

Thanks
Tom
