Scott Thanks, I will see what I find. You got a great deal on that, it would be nice if the watch has some sort of engraving with his name. I look forward to seeing what you got, if I had seen it we would have fought each other over it. Tom

Let us know when you receive it if the watch actually was made in 1862/63 or earlier. Most veterans of the War Between the States lived until the late 1890s to 1920s, depending on how old they were when they enlisted or were drafted. Some even lived into the 1930s. Most all would have acquired at least several watches or more made after the war years, up to the 1930s.

I will have to do a little more digging but it is looking like his father Emory Sr. was Governor of Massachusetts from 1854 t0 1855. I found in the Cambridge Census for 1850 that Emory the governor had a son Emory Jr. born about 1839. This is getting more interesting the more I look. Scott I will gladly pay you what you got this for! This is Emory Sr.

Just a note, it appears both Emory Sr. & Jr. also used the spelling Emery. Scott still don't know if your Emery is the son of the gov., but the gov.'s son died at the age of 45 in Chicago in May 1885, he never married & was a lawyer but according to his obit. he practiced little law. Emery Sr. was also a lawyer. Also found the gov.'s obit but neither obit mentions their family at all, just the deceased.

Mahalo Tom Looks like you nailed it. Pictures are a dead ringer. It also looks like the good Governor was looking after his son. I will be sending this off to Chris Abell For any required maintenance. I will keep you posted. Aloha And Mahalo Scott

Scott If you would like me to email you the stuff I found let me know. I like the looks of that watch with the gold dial & the eagle on it. You sure got a treasure for almost nothing. I will be interested to see more of the watch. I have one very similar in style that belonged to a Doctor in the Civil War & it dates to that time. Tom

Thought I would post two last thing, the obits for the father & then the son. I thought it strange that neither obit lists survivors but maybe that was how they did it back them. I do know that Emery Sr.'s wife out lived both her husband & son yet she is not mentioned by name in either.

I think that his rise from private to first lieutenant in just three months is a good indication that his father was the governor or someone with equal weight. Promotions tended to come a bit faster especially in units that were in heavy combat, but he would have to had 7 promotions in three months to get from Private to First Lieutenant and the from what I have seen it appears that his 4th Massachusetts Infantry Battalion did not see any action. Also, his second assignment to 39th Massachusetts likewise saw no action while he was with it (they were on guard duty around Washington at that time). Here are the ranks between Private and First Lieutenant in the Union Army during the War Between The States: Private Corporal Sergeant QuarterMaster Sergeant First Sergeant Sergeant-Major Second Lieutenant First Lieutenant

Well I called Scott and told him he said to post the pictures here, as you can see in the photo, re cased in a most interesting way. Someone has filed the pallet and escape bridges away to fit it in, then carefully glued the movement into the case, from what I can see also seen a need to pull a good length of hairspring back that was extra to requirements the list goes on!
