Work for Tom ... "Click" to Login or Register

Hi Tom. Tonight I was cleaning an old Martyn Square (930370), built between June 1st and October 31, 1876. There is one strange thing, it's a private label, of Geo Lashmore, in Market Drayton, and the case has been hallmarked in 1875, sponsor "F.F.S.", before manufacturing of movement. My conclusion is that it's likely that the movement hasn't been imported in UK by Alfred Bedford (Waltham UK, as far as I know, used to sell watches and not movements, cases being under the sponsorship A.B). While cleaning I noticed for the first time an inscription "George Palin" on the cuvette, very light, hard to see, and with a good steady hand, but not professional at all.
Now, I have found a George Palin,50, boatmaster of a river vessell, "Etruria". Mr. Palin had in the crew Samuel Palin,20, as mate. Sounds reasonable, but in 1881 I find a mr. Samuel Palin,of Terrace Rd., Widnes, executor of George Palin as a stockholder in the collapse of Southport & West Lancashire Banking Company Ltd., and again Samuel Palin,ditto, shipping agent. Well, that's all I succeeded in putting together. May I have your comments, Tom.
Best regards
mario

Well here goes;

George Lashmore born about 1841 in Southampton Hampshire, in 1891 census for Drayton he is listed as a jeweler. His son Thomas (15) is listed as jewelers apprentice.

George's father Thomas (born about 1802 in Witham Friary Somerset was also a jeweler/watchmaker according to 1851 census Southampton Holy Rood Hampshire.

in 1861, same location as 1851, father Thomas is listed as watch & clock maker & general repair. George is a watchmaker general branches. Younger brother John is a watchmaker apprentice.

In 1871 George is living with older brother Edward who was a "Fancy Repository". George is listed as a jeweler

In 1881 George is married & living in Drayton & listed as a watchmaker

In 1901 George is still at Drayton, he is listed as jeweler, watchmaker & watch proprietor. His son George is listed as a jewelers assistant.

As far as the other name George Palin. I am not up on my United Kingdom geography but I see where Drayton is in Shropshire. Unfortunately I found quite a few George Palin's with connections to Shropshire. Actually 29 of them that would have been adults during the time in question, so I am afraid without more to go one for Palin it is hard to narrow down which one. As I said 28 that lived in Shropshire, then there are pages of them for other parts of the UK.

Sorry I couldn't be of more help.

I found in the 1871 census 3 George Palins aged 4, 14 and 36 Market Drayton, Hodnet.
