Tom Allerding won this 21 J Hunter Cased Crescent Streeet from me in a recent IHC185 Auction and while cleaning it for him, I took advantage of the open movment parts to show what is to my eye the better 21 Jewel location choices of the Jeweled Motor Barrel style that Waltham contributed to the RR watch business. Before we Go there though, the Hunter Cased Waltham sure had a better Lever set than the Open face!

First, Waltham simply adds a cap on both sides of the escape wheel to make Jewels # 18 and 19. Most of the rest of the "21 Jewel" movments cap all three of these pivots including the Pallet Jewels! As the Pallet fork in non rotating, that seems like a waste of Jewels.

Then they put Two big Nice Jewels into the #1 Wheel that is being driven from the mainspring wind in a true motor barrel (same design since their model 1888)

This true motor barrel assembly was a real feather in Waltham's cap. Until Illinois came up with thier 60 hour motor, Waltham was above all the rest for smooth running motor designs.

Thanks, Dave! I always like your pictorials that show the various aspects and comparisons of watch parts. Pictures (and not drawings) are much better, at least for me. Smile
