How rare are these 18s Elgin convertible watches the book does not rate them as rare but this is the first one I have had and have had dozens of the 16 size. This one is exceptionally gorgeous too!!!!
Picture of the back to verify the real deal One other thing I noticed when removing the movement from the case this is the only movement I ever remember seeing 3 case screws
With all the fakes floating around these days we can understand why John was at first suspicious. You were wise to authenticate your dial and avoid any chance of having a problem later.
About the movement, Wayne's database shows this information...
That is coming back as a 16-size Grade 50 so you might want to check further. By the way, your "Elgin Nat'l Watch Co." signature is entirely correct for watches of this era.

You are absolutely right Lindell my mistake glad you caught that before I listed it as an 18s. I am not sure why I thought it was an 18s. I measured the dial and it is a 16s. Thanks
I see now it is in fact a real porcelain dial. I thought is looked porcelain but later Swiss replacement. I was correct that the single sunk portion is fake as we can tell from the back of the dial. My money is still on a later period Swiss porcelain dial. Maybe Elgin shopped out fancy dials to the Swiss, I really don't know. Someone enlighten me please.
John there are plenty of american dials around that do not have a seperate seconds bit that is soldered in. I am looking at sevaral on my desk as I write this. From us watch company to Rockford.
The watch and dial are both very beautiful either way, both something I would be very happy to own. I am just trying to learn what would be correct for this watch and time period. Thanks for the information.
John I did not take it the wrong way I enjoy everyones input that is how I learn and why I put them up for discussion. I would like to hear others opinion on the dial. I am not means an expert myself and still have a lot to learn.
Hi Robert, Very nice watch and dial, this is the kind of thing I like. As to the movement while scarce, the ones everyone wants are the 21J grades 91 and 72, Your watch has a great engraving and in that condition and with the dial it will bring a real nice price. Regards Geno

No question about it - This is a beauty. I bought a convertible last week and Daniel Weiss has gone to the effort to find me a dial to replace the cracked with hairlines one that comes with the watch. I just got interested in Elgin convertibles... Going to look for your watch on the auction site - I like it....
